‘Daybreak’ (1983) debut recording of guitarist Simon James including the previously unreleased recording Of ‘Chant’ by John Tavener. This is a live recording of the first performance at the Wigmore Hall in 1985 and is an unique opportunity to hear this rare piece of Tavener’s as he originally envisaged it.

‘When Simon James first approached me with the request that I write a solo guitar work for him, my initial reaction was reluctance. I have never felt drawn to writing specifically for this instrument but, as often happens, musical ideas took over. I became aware of the sound of a bazouki and in spite of the fact that I wrote it in November last year in London, its origins seem to me to belong to Greece, which I consider is my second home. The work evokes a typically Greek landscape with its ancient statues and buildings exuding a stillness that is centuries old, with somewhere in the distance the sound of a Byzantine chant.
